You can see partial targeting data for any Facebook ad your competitor is running. Meta is legally required to publish demographic delivery data for active ads, which means age ranges, gender breakdowns, and geographic distribution are visible to anyone who knows where to look. You cannot see the exact audience settings a competitor configured, but you can see who the platform is actually serving their ads to, which is often more useful.
This guide explains what Meta makes available, how to find it, what it actually tells you, and where the limits are.
What Meta Actually Discloses About Ad Targeting
Since 2018, Meta has been required under its transparency commitments to publish information about ads running on Facebook and Instagram. This data is accessible through the Meta Ad Library. For most ads, you can see the ad creative, the page running it, and how long it has been active.
For ads classified as political, electoral, or social issue ads, Meta goes further and publishes detailed demographic delivery data including:
- Age ranges of people who saw the ad (broken into brackets such as 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, and so on)
- Gender breakdown of the audience reached
- Top geographic locations where the ad was delivered
- Estimated spend range and impression volume
For standard commercial ads, the demographic breakdown is not always available at the same level of detail. However, the ad itself, the page, the creative, and the call to action are always visible. In many cases, that is enough to infer who the advertiser is going after.
The distinction matters: Meta discloses where an ad was delivered, not what the advertiser set as their targeting criteria. An advertiser may have targeted women aged 30-45 but if the algorithm served it broadly, the delivery data reflects that broader reach. Delivery data and targeting settings are not the same thing.
