What Is the Meta Ad Library?

The Meta Ad Library is a publicly accessible database of ads running across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network. Meta launched it in 2018 in response to regulatory pressure around political advertising transparency. Over time, Meta expanded it to include all active ads across all categories, not just political ones.

Every ad that runs on Meta platforms must appear in the library within 24 hours of going live. Ads remain in the library for seven years if they relate to politics, elections, or social issues. For all other ad categories, they stay visible for up to 30 days after they stop running.

The Meta Ad Library does not require an account. Anyone can search it, which makes it a genuinely open research tool, unlike most paid competitor intelligence platforms.

How to Search the Meta Ad Library: Step by Step

Step 1: Go to the Meta Ad Library

Open your browser and navigate to facebook.com/ads/library. You do not need a Meta account to access the library. If you are already logged into Facebook, you will see the library with your account context, but it does not affect your search results.

Step 2: Select Your Country

The first filter you will see is the country selector. This controls which ads appear in your results based on where the ads are being served. If you are researching a competitor targeting US customers, set this to United States. If you want to see what the same brand is running in the UK or Germany, you can switch the country accordingly.

The country filter is important because advertisers often run different creative, different offers, and different messaging across different markets. A brand that is aggressive with promotional discounts in one market may run entirely brand-focused creative in another.

Step 3: Choose the Ad Category

Below the country selector, you will see an ad category dropdown. The options are:

  • All Ads – covers every ad type across all topics
  • Issues, Elections or Politics – shows only political and social issue ads with additional transparency data
  • Housing, Employment, Credit or Social Issues – a special-access category with additional fields

For most competitor research, you will use All Ads. Unless your competitors are running regulated ad types, the other categories will simply narrow your results unnecessarily.

Step 4: Search by Advertiser Name or Keyword

The search bar allows you to search by advertiser name or by keyword. These work differently, and it is worth understanding the distinction.

Searching by advertiser name pulls up the Facebook Page associated with the advertiser. Once you find the right page, you can see all active ads running from that page. This is the most reliable way to research a specific competitor because it limits results to one advertiser.
